Here is the Day 1 Recap of my Fab 40 NYC trip to celebrate my 40th birthday!
Flights went great and were pretty much on time and my Lyft ride from the airport to the hotel was fine, just long and lots of traffic. I have already decided I never want to drive in NYC.

Checked into my hotel with no problems, have a room on the 6th floor looking north. Can’t really see much – all these big buildings get in the way. I did figure out I can see the side wall of one of the theatres I’m going to.

I then went to Shake Shack for dinner and then walked around the few blocks around my hotel and found 4 of the 8 theatres I’ll be going to. Including seeing the Majestic Theatre where Phantom plays. I got a bit emotional at seeing it – just getting so excited to see Phantom for the 10th time and this time on Broadway! Explored Times Square a bit. Then went to the Tipsy Scoop for alcohol infused ice cream, then to Target for water and snacks for my room, then back “home”.

I’ve now touched up ironing my shirts and have them in the order I’m going to wear them.

Some thoughts.

Most places there are a lot fewer people on the sidewalks than I expected – I guess I thought it was going to be busy at all times in all places, but no, just at certain times (like when shows are about to start) and places (like Time Square).

I ventured on the subway – not too bad, but Chicago’s system is still way better.

Times Square was pretty neat, but nothing overwhelming for me. I was more excited to see the Majestic Theatre where Phantom is. Funny story, two things I wanted to find in Times Square were where the ball drops and the building with the news ticker on it – since I’m used to seeing those on New Year’s Eve. Didn’t see them at first. Walked a little further and then turned around and saw the ball. I guess I didn’t realize they leave it up year round. Also, when I was walking a little further I found the news ticker building, which I had already seen, just didn’t realize it. It was in the background of the picture I took of the Broadway sign.

Now to rest up and tomorrow will be Central Park and Dear Evan Hansen.
