Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Notice – I did not say Happy Turkey Day.  Today is not Turkey Day, and it is one of my pet peeves when people call it Turkey Day.  Calling it Turkey Day completely loses the true meaning of the day.  So please don’t call it Turkey Day.  Also, make sure you celebrate the true meaning of the day – to stop and reflect on all that we have to be thankful for.  Even those that don’t think they have much, if they stop and compare to what many others have in other countries — there is so much for us to be thankful for.  We live in a country where we are free and can celebrate how we want and when we want, we can worship God (who gives us all we have to be thankful for) how we want — and if we want.  So remember — on Thanksgiving — celebrate being thankful – and then you can enjoy your turkey!

Here are a few comics that sums up my feelings about Thanksgiving – some comics can put thoughts so clearly.  Enjoy!

This week’s website is all about TV and where to get info about all your shows.  The place to go (or is it a person?) is The Futon Critic This website has the latest news about TV shows on all the networks and cable channels.  The main reason I go to this site is in the fall to check out the new schedule grids so I can see what shows are returning, if any are moving around, and what new shows will be introduced.  There is also a page for When Does (insert show) Come Back? that you can see a list of all past shows and see when and if they will ever air new episodes.  There is information about new shows that are coming up year round and lists of what shows have been cancelled.  So if you ever have a question about your favorite TV show or want to find some new ones to watch go ask The Futon Critic!

This week’s website is the Acronym Finder at http://www.acronymfinder.com/.  This is the place to go if you ever need to know what an acronym stands for.  Simply type in the acronym and it will give you a list of possible meanings.  The results are grouped by category so you can narrow it down to a Technology term, Military, Government, etc.   So the next time someone is LOL or tells you to RTFM or they need something ASAP you know where to go.  Just remember to use at your own risk because IANAL and we don’t want a PEBKAC error.

Yesterday at work my coworker asked me a question – and I answered it.  In response she asked me how I could remember the information I told her.  I sure don’t know how my mind remembers so much information about database tables, programs, how things work, etc.  I do amaze myself at times with all the information that my brain spits out when I need it.  It would be interesting to somehow know how much data my brain contains in computer terms.

On the other hand – it is interesting at what my brain has problems with.  Namely it’s names.  I have the hardest time remembering names.  Both of people that I’ve just met or those I’ve known for years – at times I cannot think of the name at all.

Just an interesting contrast of how well my brain will retain some information while having problems with others.

And now the long (if you count one day as long) awaited weekly feature of my website – Website Wednesdays!  I plan on talking about and/or reviewing a website each Wednesday.  Starting out these will be websites that I use a lot and find very useful, but seems that not everyone knows about them, so thus I shall share them with you!

This week’s website is the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).  This website contains pretty much anything you wanted to know about any movie or TV series.  You can search by show or movie name, character name, crew name, actor name, etc.  Each show has a complete (mostly) list of characters and who played them and the staff.  Since everything is linked together you can move between shows and actors, etc. with ease.

One example I always like using it for is when I’m watching a TV show that has a guest actor or actress in it.  I’m sure I know that person from some other show or movie but am not sure which one it is.  So I look up the show I’m watching, find that character in the list, and the click on them to find out what other shows or movies they were in.  You could also use it to find other movies your favorite actor or actress is in, what other shows your favorite character is in or who else played that part in different movies.

There is also all kinds of interesting biographical details about the people and fun facts about the shows and movies.  These include bloopers and other inconsistencies in the show.  So either check the list before you watch the show to know what to look for or check the list after and see if you caught any of the goofs!  All along you probably thought that every movie was perfect – far from it!

If you are interested in finding out how the IMDb started on its way to the vast database it now is — check out the IMDb History Page.

So until next Wednesday – enjoy checking out this website!
